How We Build Confident, Resilient Puppies from Day Three

At Elite Blend Labradoodles, we believe that exceptional puppies are raised through intentional early development, not chance. One of the foundational techniques we use is Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)—a proven method that supports stronger, more adaptable puppies from the very beginning.
ENS is just one of the many thoughtful steps we take behind the scenes, but it plays an important role in shaping the confident, well-adjusted dogs our families know and love.
What is Early Neurological Stimulation?
Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) is a structured set of gentle exercises performed on puppies between days 3 and 16 of life, during a critical stage of neurological development.
At this age, puppies are highly impressionable and rapidly developing. Carefully introducing mild stimulation during this window can positively impact how their nervous system develops and responds to the world.
When Do We Start ENS?
We begin ENS at day 3 and continue daily through day 16.
Each session lasts only a few seconds per exercise and is done in a calm, controlled environment. The goal is to introduce small, manageable challenges—never stress or overwhelm—so puppies build confidence early.

The Five ENS Exercises
The ENS protocol includes five specific movements:
1. Tactile Stimulation
Gentle stimulation between the toes using a soft object.

2. Head Held Upright
Puppy is held vertically with head above tail.
3. Head Pointed Down
Puppy is held with head gently angled downward.
4. Supine Position (On Their Back)

Puppy is placed on its back in the handler’s hand.
5. Thermal Stimulation
Puppy is briefly placed on a cool (not cold) surface.
Each movement lasts just 3–5 seconds, making the entire process quick, safe, and intentional.

Why Does ENS Work?
ENS works by introducing mild, controlled stressors during a key developmental window.
This helps activate the neurological system and encourages puppies to adapt and respond. Over time, this builds stronger coping mechanisms and resilience.
In simple terms:
Puppies learn early that new sensations are safe—and that they can handle them.
The Benefits of Early Neurological Stimulation
Puppies exposed to ENS may experience:
- Improved stress tolerance
- Enhanced immune system function
- Stronger cardiovascular performance
- Greater adaptability in new environments
- Increased confidence
- Faster recovery from stress
These benefits help puppies transition more smoothly into their new homes and family environments.
A Small Step That Makes a Big Difference

ENS is just one component of our larger puppy-raising program.
At Elite Blend Labradoodles, we also focus on:
- Early socialization experiences
- Foundational training (including crate introduction and routines)
- Exposure to real-life environments
- Consistent, intentional handling
